SHRM Foundation Scholarships for SHRM Members
Scholarships will be offered again in 2010. Click here to view application instructions and more information.  

This program is generously underwritten by the J. J. Keller Foundation.

 

The SHRM Foundation will award a total of $100,000 annually in scholarships for SHRM members pursuing degrees in HR-related fields or SPHR, GPHR, PHR or California certification. Members working in the media industry and pursuing a college degree are eligible to apply for a Barbara Sanchez Scholarship.  

 

In addition, SHRM professional chapters and state councils are eligible to compete for the Certification scholarship to fund programs that promote SPHR, GPHR, PHR or California certification. (Note: 'SHRM members' includes professional, general or associate members. Student members, student chapters and local-only members of chapters are not eligible for this scholarship program.)

 

Awards:
60 Certification Scholarships ($750 each)
40 Academic Scholarships ($1,375 each)
5   Barbara Sanchez Scholarships ($1,500 each) 

All applications must be submitted online. In 2010, you may begin the online application process, save your work and then complete the process at a later date. Your application must be completed and submitted by July 15 to be considered for an award.

SHRM Foundation Dissertation Awards
In partnership with the HR Division of the Academy of Management, the Foundation presents four $5000 awards each year to support the dissertation research of promising doctoral candidates.

HR HOUSTON CONTINUING EDUCATION

HR Houston offers a variety of educational opportunities to meet the needs of HR professionals in the Gulf Coast area. Offerings include monthly meeting programs, half-day seminars, HR 101 and Relationship Management for the HR Business Partner professional development courses, Certification Study Groups, and the extensive offerings of the annual Gulf Coast Symposium on HR Issues.

 

Education Courses Offered

  • Certification Study Group - HR Houston offers the Certification Study Group to assist HR professionals in preparing to sit for the Human Resource Certification Institute's certification exam that confers the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designations. The Study Group offers regular meetings that utilize the HR Review Start Smart materials with the opportunity to meet other professionals also studying for the exam, and covers each of the six functional areas of the HRCI Body of Knowledge.  The registration fee includes the extensive HR Review Workbook/CD with detailed outlines, 750 practice questions with comprehensive answers, and hundreds of electronic flashcards.   • Human Resources 101 - This 2-day program gives proven, practical applied employment law and effective HR practice education that quickly provides the tools you need in a format you can relate to. Choose the two-day course or one day only. BROCHURE
      
  • Relationship Management for the HR Business Partner - Do people come to you to vent and leave their emotional baggage sitting on your doorstep?  Are you having trouble convincing people that you are on their side? DAY 2 - Controlling the Interview: Tips for Making Good Questions More Effective
This session is a specially tailored version of the Core Competencies session of our popular Relationship Management seminar. Controlling the Interview focuses directly on interview technique and is appropriate for HR practitioners and non-HR hiring authorities. This session builds out the skills necessary to conduct low friction inquiry. In addition, it provides a practical strategy for quickly getting candidates to open up and tell you what you need to know.

From time-to-time HR Houston forms affiliations with other organizations to expand the professional development options available to members:

  • Together with Rice University’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, the chapter sponsors Professional HR Development, Global HR Development and Senior HR Development.
  • South Texas College of Law extends special registration pricing for HR Houston members for the Employment Law Course held annually in July.
  • The Houston Compensation Association discounts certificate classes to earn CCP or CBP designations.
  • The National Foreign Trade Council offers workshops to HR Houston members to develop expertise in the rapidly expanding area of international HR.

Shelby P. Morton Scholarship

The purpose of the Shelby P. Morton Scholarship is to provide annual higher education scholarships for qualified members of collegiate SHRM chapters in the greater Houston area.

ULC offers support by filling requests for HR professionals who can speak to students about the field of human resources profession and supplying professional volunteers who serve as liaisons to student chapters and student liaison opportunities within HR Houston.

HR Review: Last Minute Course

This 2 1/2 day course, offered shortly before the HRCI exam window, begins with a comprehensive, difficult, 225 questions, four-hour exam, taken under exam-day conditions. The next two days are spent studying the exam to understand the correct answers, related facts and the strategic positioning of the question. This program really gets the test-taker ready for the tough questions and can serve as a "final assessment" in helping evaluate your exam readiness.

HR Houston Members, $345; Non-members, $395. The program includes all program materials, a continental breakfast and lunch on Friday and Saturday.

 

Opportunities for Recertification

Maintaining the PHR and SPHR certifications requires the HR professional to accumulate 60 hours of professional development every three years for recertification. 

HR Houston as an Approved Provider offers Mini-Seminars, Best Practices, and Interest Group sessions (up to 4 hours at each meeting) that may typically be used to count toward the requirement.  In addition, the programs at the Gulf Coast Symposium and the Half-Day Seminar series provide a significant number of professional development hours.  More information regarding recertification is available at www.hrci.org.
